Jamari McDavid scored a lot of points in Kenton Ridge’s gym, but what she did practically every minute she was in the gym was sweat. That was due to the running coach Ed Foulk made McDavid and her teammates do over the last four years.

The tough practices helped turn McDavid into one of the area’s most prolific scorers, and she was honored for success on the court Tuesday night when she was named as the Pam Evans Smith Miss Clark County Basketball award recipient during a banquet at Wittenberg University.

McDavid became Kenton Ridge’s all-time leading scorer late last season and finished with 2,022 career points. She was named first team all-Ohio in both her junior and senior seasons and first team all-Central Buckeye Conference all four years.

McDavid said none of it would have been possible without Foulk and his assistant coaches.

“They made us run and work hard every practice — or at least attempt to work hard — and they made us get a good sweat in every practice,” McDavid said. “Their coaching really prepared me for what I’m going to see the next four years.”

McDavid signed with Wofford University, a Division I school in South Carolina, earlier this month.

“I leave (for Wofford) on June 5, and I’m so excited,” McDavid said.

Kenton Ridge sophomore Mikala Morris was named to the all-Clark County county team along with McDavid. Morris, who averaged 18.9 points and 16.5 rebounds per game, broke news when she accepted a plaque by announcing that Foulk is retiring.

Foulk has coached various teams since 1973 and has been at Kenton Ridge since the school opened. Foulk said he told the team Monday night he was stepping down after over three decades as the Cougars’ coach.

“Playing for him, it was really the best four years of my life,” McDavid said of Foulk. “He’s taught me a lot of good things, and all the staff, including Stephanie (Bennett) and Laaci (Farris Miller) have been a big part. It’s just all-around amazing, and he’s going to be missed a lot.”

Tecumseh coach Danielle Thomas was named county coach of the year, while Shawnee coach Blake Garberich and Greenon junior Maleigha Young won sportsmanship awards presented by the Southwest Ohio Officials Association.

Northwestern senior Abby Zerkle was named to the all-county team and also was awarded the Jim Murray scholarship. Zerkle went over 1,000 career points last season and will play basketball at Otterbein.

Others on the all-county team are: Jessica Erwin and Maddy McKee, Southeastern; Presley Griffitts and Corinne Thomas, Tecumseh; Des Parks, Shawnee; Hayley Suchland, Northeastern; Reagan Ware, Greenon.
