Matos picks new school 9 days after announcing decision to leave Dayton

Former Dayton Flyers guard Jhery Matos did not need much time to pick a new school. He announced Wednesday he will finish his college career at UNC Charlotte.

» ARCHDEACON: For Matos, it’s hard to say goodbye

Matos, a grad transfer who can play right away without sitting out a season, made the decision nine days after entering the transfer portal.

“God’s first always,” Matos wrote on Twitter. “Thanks to all the coaches that put time and effort into my recruitment, I really appreciated it. for the past few weeks I have been on a rollercoaster of emotions but finally I have decided to finish my college career at UNC Charlotte!”

Matos played in six games in the 2018-19 season before suffering a season-ending foot injury during the final game of the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas. He appeared in 26 of 31 games last season, averaging 1.8 points in 8.7 minutes per game. For most of the season, he was the last of the nine available scholarship players to see the court, and he played double-figure minutes only three times in 18 A-10 games.

Matos will join a Conference USA program that finished 16-13 last season, ending a streak of five losing seasons. Charlotte coach Ron Sanchez is a native of the Dominican Republic like Matos.
