Lady Yellow Jackets take OIC crown

The Cedarville University women’s basketball team won its 10th game in a row, defeating Urbana University 73-63 in the Ohio Independents Championship game at Callan Athletic Center on Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets shot 45 percent from the field in the first half (14-for-31) to build a 39-29 halftime lead. Cedarville led by as many as 14 points in the second half to improve to 21-7 on the season.

Kayla Jenerette scored a game-high 16 points, Raegan Ryan had 13 and Deborah Gordon came off the bench to add 11 points and nine rebounds for the Yellow Jackets.

Ciara Geiger and Katy Barkley both had 15 points, DeVonyea Johnson scored 14 points and Jessica Saffold pulled down 13 rebounds for the Blue Knights (14-15). Urbana finished 12-7 behind head coach Maria Marchesano, who was hired in December.

Cedarville will host Grace College in the NCCAA Midwest Region final at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The host Yellow Jackets built a 56-45 lead with 12:02 left in regulation. Walsh (26-5) went on a 23-11 run to take a 68-67 lead with 1:17 left. Zimmy Nwogbo hit one of two free throws with 37 seconds remaining to force OT.

Brian Grant scored a game-high 18 points, Nwogbo had 14 points and 12 rebounds, Bryan Redic added 13 points and Zach Brown poured in 12 for Cedarville (19-9).

Cedarville will host Spring Arbor in the NCCAA Midwest Region final at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
