Gems' goalie pulls through for win

FORT WAYNE — Goalie Larry Sterling led the Dayton Gems to a 3-2 win over the Fort Wayne Komets on Friday night, turning aside 45 shots.

Charlie Townsend scored the eventual winner in the third period to complete the Gems’ comeback from a 2-1 deficit. Jon Ornelas and Kyle Bochek also scored for Dayton. Bochek’s goal tied it at the 18:32 mark.

The Gems improved to 12-13-6. The teams face off again tonight at 7 p.m., this time at Hara Arena.

• Earlier Friday, the Gems acquired forward David Nimmo, a former Central Hockey League rookie of the year, from the Arizona Sundogs for future considerations. Nimmo, 29, had 24 points (7 goals, 17 assists) in 31 games for the Sundogs.
