Triad baseball coach Nichols steps down after 19 seasons

Nichols, a Northeastern High School graduate, coached for 19 seasons. His team finished as state runner-up in 2004 and 20016. He was 377-164 in his career.

Nichols started in 1998. His last game was Saturday. The Cardinals lost 5-4 to Newark Catholic in the Division IV state championship game at Huntington Park in Columbus.

Nichols said he works for the Career Center in Springfield and teaches at Shawnee High School. The 45-minute drive to Triad was the biggest reason he’s stepping down. He said he was always late to practice and not being at school with his players was tough.

He said another factor in stepping down is he also has a son in eighth grade in the Northeastern School District who plays baseball.

“I will more than likely end up somewhere else coaching next year,” Nichols said. “As far as where, I’m not totally sure just yet.”
