Trotwood held, and after a slow start, unleashed 30 first-half points in a 37-13 win in a Greater Western Ohio Conference crossover game on Friday.
Trotwood sophomore Ashton “Action” Jackson nearly doubled his rushing total in one game, ripping through the Wildcats’ defense for 242 yards and two long touchdown runs (34, 41) on 13 carries. He entered the game with 262 yards on 23 carries.
“He practices hard like that every single day in practice,” Rams coach Maurice Douglass said of the 5-foot-10, 173-pound sophomore. “When he gets in the game it happens like that. ... He’s going to be a special back. But we have four backs that are really good.”
Junior Isreal Green, who battled issues with his footing early, rolled up 159 yards on 21 carries. That gave the Rams’ duo 401 yards combined and three TDs.
Overall, Trotwood finished with 519 yards in total offense to Springfield’s 270.
With scoring opportunities limited against the Rams’ defense, that might explain why Springfield (1-4) tried to grab the momentum early with that fourth-down attempt.
“I don’t worry about what they do,” Douglass said. “I just worry about what we do.”
As do the area’s defensive coordinators. Trotwood — which averages 41 points per game — connected for TDs twice through the air as quarterback Michael Simpson found Trai Mobley for strikes of 3 and 11 yards.
Springfield scored two touchdowns in a 13-second span starting with 3:47 left in the game.
Chris Wallace finished the game with 208 yards passing, completing 18-of-40 passes. He accounted for both Wildcats touchdowns, to Tim Reed and Andrae Carey. Carey finished the game with 88 yards receiving on just four catches, while Titus Montgomery had seven catches for 59 yards.
Corey Timmons had 60 yards rushing on 10 carries, while Onslow Williams added 32 yards on the ground.
So, how much fun are the Rams having? “It’ll be a lot more fun in Week 15,” Douglass said.
