SPRINGFIELD — Shawnee’s chances for a Central Buckeye Conference Kenton Trail Division baseball title took a huge blow as the host Braves fell to Bellefontaine 6-4 on Saturday.
Trailing 6-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Shawnee loaded the bases with no outs. The Braves had two strikeouts, a run-scoring walk and a pop out to end the rally and the game.
Andrew Young had two hits and two RBIs. Joey Chapman and Derek Zinkhon also had two hits for Shawnee.
The Braves (13-11) are now 11-4 in the CBC Kenton Trail Division with one league game remaining. The Chieftains (15-6) are 10-3 in the CBC with three conference games left.
Tippecanoe is 12-3 in the CBC after beating Stebbins twice Saturday. The Red Devils can clinch at least a share of the Kenton Trail Division title with a win at Northwestern at 5 p.m. Monday.
• Jordan Brewer’s two-run single sparked a three-run third inning as host Northwestern (12-13, 5-8 CBC) defeated Graham 4-2 in the second game of a doubleheader.
D.J. Snipe’s RBI double in the sixth gave the Falcons a 2-1 win in Game 1. Graham finished the season 10-17 and 7-9 in the CBC.
• Division I Northmont (20-6) handed visiting Triad its first loss of the season, 3-0.
Tre McIntyre went 2-for-3 with a double for the Cardinals (22-1).
Softball
Kallie Coy went 4-for-6 with a double and three RBIs, and Kristin Pencil also went 4-for-6 with two RBIs as Northwestern won a 12-inning marathon over Graham 9-7 in the first game of a doubleheader.
Miranda Whip went 4-for-4, and Brenna Oakes, Jensen Kelis and Courtney Pearson all had two RBIs each as the Warriors won Game 2, 12-9.
Northwestern (17-9, 11-4) will face No. 2 seed Tippecanoe in the Division II sectional final at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Urbana High School.
Renee Carnes went 6-for-9 with four doubles and four RBIs for the Falcons (14-12, 7-8 in the CBC).
• Three straight two-out RBI singles by Haley Banion, Andrea Schaaf and Brianna Toops sparked a four-run fifth as host Southeastern won a sectional-final tuneup over Waynesville (17-6), 5-2.
Toops hit her career-first home run, a solo shot in the second, for the Trojans.
No. 3 seed Southeastern (17-7) will play No. 2 seed Williamsburg in the D-IV final at Kings High School at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
• Shawnee opened up an 11-4 lead after five innings, then held on for dear life as Bellefontaine put six runs across the plate in the top of the seventh before succumbing 11-10 to the Braves in regular-season action.
Chelsey Adamson, Emily McKillip and Sami Smiddy each had three hits for Shawnee (16-8, 10-4 CBC), while Marta Lockwood added two hits and four RBIs and Ashley Dalton chipped in with two hits and two RBIs.
