Kenton Ridge golfers don’t miss a beat on links

SPRINGFIELD — All four Kenton Ridge High School golfers shot under 40 as the Cougars boys team won its season opening tri-match with Northeastern and Springfield on Tuesday, Aug. 17.

Clay Portz and Hunter Clark were medalists with 37s. Teammate Seth Fearn fired a 39 in his first varsity match, while Luke Schlicher also carded a 39. Kenton Ridge (2-0) finished with a score of 152.

Ryan Malone shot a 40 as the Jets placed second (173). Springfield was third with a score of 209.

• Ben Rutan was third with a 78 and Ryan Meister was fourth with an 80 as West Liberty-Salem won the Champaign County Invitational.

Storm Shipp had an 88 and Derrick Overholt had a 89 as the Tigers finished with a score of 335.

Triad’s Quinton Yocom was medalist with a 75 as the Cardinals placed second (346). Yocom defeated Urbana’s Derek Cobb, who also shot a 75, in a playoff to finish first.

Girls golf

Greenon’s Haley Larson was medalist for the second straight year as the Knights placed second at the Benjamin Logan Invitational.

Larson shot a 85 as Greenon tied Bellefontaine with a score of 410. The Knights took second on a fifth golfer scorecard playoff. Benjamin Logan won the meet with a 397.

Girls tennis

Frannie Trempe, Renae Pavlatos and Brenna McCombs all won in straight sets in singles action as Catholic Central (2-0) defeated London 3-2.

• Manisha Nezhad, Audrey Chitkara and Saarah Khan lost only two games playing singles as Springfield beat Fairborn 5-0 in the Wildcats’ season opener.
