Golf: Lakota West freshman wins national title at site of Masters

Lakota West freshman Natalia Sompolvorachai is a national champion.

Sompolvorachai won the chipping competition Sunday in girls 14-15 age division at the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals at Augusta National, site of this week’s Masters tournament.

Her first chip finished 2 feet, 1 inch away from the cup. Her second was just five inches away.

Sompolvorachai finished ninth in putting and 10th in driving to finish ninth overall in her age group.

According to her bio on the Drive, Chip and Putt website, Sompolvorachai just missed making the national finals last year and watched last year's competition on TV.

“I did watch it and it made me even more determined to make it to the finals,” she said.

She was among 80 national finalists competing Sunday who qualified through local, sub-regional and regional competitions. There were four age divisions — 7-9, 10-11, 12-13 and 14-15 — for both girls and boys.

Sompolvorachai was the top golfer for the Firebirds’ district-qualifying team. She finished runner-up in the Greater Miami Conference tournament and was a first-team, all-conference honoree.
