Eier carries the load in Tecumseh’s win

Arrows rush for 276 yards, and senior gains 207 of them, scoring two touchdowns.

NEW CARLISLE — After carrying the football 32 times and rushing for a career-high 207 yards, Zeke Eier wanted more.

“All of us could play another game. We’re ready,” the Tecumseh High School senior said following a 27-14 Arrows win against Urbana at Spitzer Stadium.

Well, one game in a week is enough. The Arrows will take the Central Buckeye Conference crossover win.

They have Eier to thank for it. He scored twice, including the game-clincher on a 5-yard run with 4:13 left. Eier carried the ball on all six plays of that drive. He had 65 yards in the first quarter alone, when Tecumseh built a 13-0 lead.

Eier had some other people to thank.

“You can’t say enough about our line,” Eier said. “The holes were wide, and they deserve all the credit. I just carried the football.”

Eier’s performance was even more dominant considering Mike McKee, the Arrows’ second leading rusher, suffered an injury and didn’t play offense in the second half. The team rushed for 276 yards.

“It was Superhero Night here, and (Eier) might’ve been the biggest superhero of all,” Tecumseh head coach Kent Massie said. “It was a great team effort, and he had kids making blocks for him, but he carried the load. We ask the seniors to step up for us, and he stepped up tonight.”

Tecumseh (3-1) took control of the game with nine first downs and two touchdowns in the first quarter. Tony Evans scored on a 1-yard run at the 6:28 mark, then McKee scored with 43 seconds left.

Tecumseh increased the lead to 19-0 on a 3-yard run by Eier with 3:29 left in the half.

Urbana (2-2) cut the deficit to 19-7 to end the half with a 14-play, 66-yard drive capped by a 1-yard run by Tanner Lawrence.

After a scoreless third, Eier’s second score gave the Arrows a 27-7 lead.

Bret Buchanan then hit Darnyl Smith on a 64-yard post pattern. Tecumseh recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock from there.

Lawrence finished with 88 rushing yards on 24 carries. Buchanan passed for 147 yards, 101 to Smith.

But for the most part, the Tecumseh defense kept Urbana from finding its rhythm.

“Our defense did a nice job of being fundamentally sound,” Massie said. “We had a good pass rush (with three sacks). We played good pass defense tonight.”

Urbana has now lost two in a row.

“Our kids play hard. We’re just making too many mistakes against good football teams,” Urbana head coach Geron Stokes said.
