Crew leads area state swim placers

Shawnee High School junior Justin Crew is making progress.

After notching sixth- and seventh-place finishes at state last year, Crew moved up the podium with a third- and fourth-place finish Friday night in the Division II Swimming and Diving Championships at C.T. Branin Natatorium.

Crew clocked a time of 1 minute, 41.39 seconds to finish third behind Oakwood’s Brock Turner and Jackson Higgins in the finals of the boys 200-yard freestyle. In the 500 free, Crew, a three-time state qualifier, placed fourth in 4:39.94.

Catholic Central juniors Ragen Engel and Matt Petit also placed in a pair of events.

Petit finished third in the 100 backstroke in 51.61 and sixth in the 50 free in 21.56.

Engel swam to a sixth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.98). She finished seventh in the 50 free (23.80).

Division I: Springfield senior Trevor Keriazes is making the most of his first trip to state.

Keriazes notched the seventh-fastest time in the 100 breast (58.07) to reach today’s finals. The top eight swimmers from Friday morning’s prelims advanced.

Today’s Division I swimming finals are set for 4 p.m.
