Cold-shooting Braves ousted

Northwestern no match for state-ranked Carroll.

The Shawnee girls basketball team could not overcome a cold shooting night as the Braves lost to Bellefontaine 38-31 in the first round of the Division II sectional tournament at Xenia High School on Thursday.

Shawnee shot only 23 percent from the field (12-for-52) to finish with a season-low in points scored.

The No. 9 seed Braves led 20-19 heading into the fourth quarter. The No. 11 seed Chieftains outscored Shawnee 19-11 in the fourth quarter to get their second straight victory over the Braves. Bellefontaine defeated Shawnee 44-43 in the season-finale last Saturday.

Junior India Davis scored 10 points and senior Carly Gregory added nine points and 15 rebounds for the Braves (8-13).

Jazmyn Hailey had 14 points for the Chieftains (6-15).

Carroll 81, Northwestern 25: The top-seeded and state-ranked Patriots were too much for the Warriors to handle in D-I Xenia first round action.

Allison Viney led Northwestern (1-20) with 12 points.

Carroll (19-2) was ranked fourth in D-II in the final coaches poll.
