No advantage for Northwestern bowlers at Victory Lanes

Despite competing at home lanes, new format will make it tough for Warriors.

SPRINGFIELD — Bowling on its home turf won’t mean anything for Northwestern High School at the sectional boys bowling tournament at Victory Lanes, today, Feb. 19.

That’s because the tournament, which begins at 10 a.m., will be bowled on a modified house shot, completely different and more difficult than what the Warriors are used to at their home lanes.

“It’s something we’ve not bowled on before,” said Northwestern coach Mike Dobie.

The Warriors (14-2) won the Central Buckeye Conference Mad River Division this season and have five bowlers averaging 198 or better: Tanner Spencer (220.7), Brandon Oty (218.2), Damian Doughman (208.8), Mike Goheen (201.1) and Justin Cochran (198.6).

Four team and four individual bowlers from nonqualifying teams advance to the district tournament at Eastern Lanes in Middletown on Feb. 27.

The Warriors will be considered one of the favorites to advance along with defending state champion Kenton Ridge, Ohio Heritage Conference champion Mechanicsburg, Sidney, Versailles and Urbana.

Each team had two hours to practice on the more difficult shot this week at Victory. Dobie knows the team will have to step up in a big way to qualify.

“We’ll be trying to get the kids lined up and adjust when the lanes start changing,” Dobie said.

The same goes for the Warriors girls team, which also won the CBC Mad River with a 15-1 record. They’ll bowl at 10 a.m. Saturday at Victory Lanes.
