A pair of special teams plays helped visiting Trotwood pull away for a 33-21 win over Wapakoneta in a Division III, Region 12 playoff opener on Friday night.

Sammy Anderson had a punt return for a touchdown and Ravae Garrett recovered a fumble for a TD on the ensuing kickoff as Trotwood went on a 20-0 run in the third quarter to take control.

Cooper Stewart finished 13-of-18 for 135 yards and two touchdowns, one each to Keon’tae Huguely and Anderson, and Hezekiah Hudson-Davis added a TD run to pace the Trotwood offense.

Trotwood improved to 8-3 and advances to face St. Marys Memorial in the second round.

DIVISION I

Region 2

Tol. Whitmer 35, Northmont 21: Northmont burst out to a 14-0 lead but Tol. Whitmer answered with a 28-0 run. Northmont cut the deficit to seven in the third quarter with a 31-yard touchdown throw from Keaton Kesling to Markus Allen, the second TD toss of the night between the pair, but Whitmer held on for the win. Northmont wrapped up the season at 6-5.

Region 4

Elder 42, Lakota West 17: Elder jumped ahead 21-0 before Lakota West got on the board with a Josh Laine field goal in the second quarter. Aiden Miller added a TD run for West but Elder proved too much. Lakota West closed the season at 7-4. Elder advances to play St. Xavier next week.

Division II

Region 7

Olentangy 42, Troy 10: Brayden Siler scored on a 75-yard TD run on the first play from scrimmage and four plays later Troy tacked on a field goal after a fumble recovery, but Olentangy took charge after that. Siler finished 8-of-13 for 83 yards, becoming the first Troy quarterback to surpass 1,000 yards in both rushing and passing. Troy ended the season at 8-3.

Division III

Region 12

St. Marys Memorial 14, Franklin 10: Ty Howell and Russ Henschen each had a rushing score and St. Marys had a goalline stop late in the fourth quarter to hold on for the victory. St. Marys moved to 9-2 and will play Trotwood in the next round. Franklin finished the year 9-2.

Division VI

Region 23

Anna 47, Minster 21: Riley Huelskamp racked up 291 yards on the ground with four touchdowns to pace Anna and Bart Bixler added two TD runs and a 52-yard TD throw to Jeffrey Richards. Trent Roetgerman caught a pair of touchdowns from Jacob Niemeyer for Minster. Anna improved to 10-1 and moves on to face Sherwood Fairview in the second round. Minster ended the season at 9-2.

Archbold 27, Coldwater 21: Jake Hemmelgarn's third touchdown throw tied the game up at 21 with 1:51 to play, but Archbold drove down the field and scored a TD on the final second to bounce Coldwater from the playoffs. Coldwater dropped to 8-3.

Region 24

Covington 33, Worthington Christian 27: Covington stormed out to a 27-7 halftime lead but Worthington Christian climbed back into the game. Cade Schmelzer had a four-yard TD scramble late in the fourth quarter and Covington ran eight straight plays to run out the clock at the end. Covington moved to 9-2 and will play Chillicothe Southeastern in the second round.

Mechanicsburg 32, Adena 7: Jake Hurst had three rushing touchdowns in the second half as Mechanicsburg closed the game on a 26-0 run to run away for the win. Hurst finished with 120 yards rushing and Chayse Propst had 132 with one TD. 'Burg improved to 9-2 and will face Grandview Heights in the next round.

Chillicothe Southeastern 40, Dayton Christian 3: Matt Batson rushed for 43 yards and threw for 52 and the Dayton Christian defense forced a pair of fumbles in a losing effort. Dayton Christian closed the season at 8-3.
