The description for voters is famously silent on specifics necessary to win the award except that the player is “the most outstanding college football player.”
Many feel that several other finalists had better seasons, both statistically and in team success. Mark Ingram’s Alabama and Colt McCoy’s Texas are both undefeated and will play for the national championship.
McCoy, like Tebow, has produced a wonderful career, and he doesn’t have a Heisman on his resume, while Tebow does. Does that give McCoy the edge?
The Heisman Trophy is not unlike the Bowl Championship Series in that it stirs an amazing amount of debate and can leave the fans wanting for an explanation of exactly how we got that season’s result. In that consideration, it’s an appropriate fit in college football.
But until its guidelines for the winner are more specifically defined, we’re going to have finalists like Tebow, whose outstanding career is nearly unmatched, whether this season was his best or not.
