Former Wright State men’s basketball coach Billy Donlon

is joining Northwestern after spending the the 2016-17 season as an assistant at Michigan.

It was Northwestern coach Chris Collins who helped Donlon land the job at Michigan following his firing after six seasons as head coach at Wright State.

The move to Northwestern, which made its first NCAA tournament appearance in school history last season, reunites Donlon with his childhood friend Collins and high school coach Brian James, who has been a Wildcats assistant the last four seasons.

Donlon’s father Bill Sr. was an assistant coach at Northwestern from 1987-94.

“This was not a professional move,” Donlon told MLive.com. “Guys make moves to put themselves in position to be a head coach. None of that was the case here. I would not have left for any other program.”
