The game matches two former Akron Zips head coaches: Duquesne’s Keith Dambrot and West Virginia’s Bob Huggins.

"We're proud to team with Coach Huggins and the Mountaineers to help the people of Dayton," Dambrot said in a press release. "Coach Huggins and I both have many ties to the state of Ohio, and this is a small way to help those directly affected by the events of August 4. I hope we can fill the Coliseum for a worthy cause."

Division I schools do not normally play preseason exhibition games against each other except in the so-called “secret scrimmages,” which are not allowed to be publicized, but in recent years, the NCAA has allowed programs to play charity games.

According to NCAA.com, "Schools can utilize an existing preseason exhibition game against a non-Division I opponent to raise funds for charity or can seek a waiver to allow a previously scheduled practice scrimmage against a Division I opponent to be played as a fundraising exhibition game."
