Dayton junior Alex Gavrilovic leaving men’s basketball program

Dayton junior Alex Gavrilovic is leaving the program after appearing in 15 of 37 games during the 2013-14 season. The 6-foot-9 forward from Strasbourg, France, saw his minutes dwindle as the season progressed. He played in one of the last nine games, seeing four minutes of action in the Sweet 16 victory over Stanford.

Dayton coach Archie Miller said Gavrilovic will graduate and explore his options at other colleges and also professionally overseas. Miller said Gavrilovic leaves “on great terms.”

Dan Barto, Gavrilovic’s coach at IMG Academy, confirmed the news of Gavrilovic’s departure earlier on Friday.

“Alex has received his release and will look to transfer upon graduation or potentially turn pro back in France.,” Barto wrote in an email. “He will be looking for a situation with 25 plus minutes per game for his final year of eligibility most likely in a smaller conference. He was their first recruit and loves his Dayton family. They had a great run and developed tremendously. He leaves on great terms but he wanted to make sure the staff had notice to use the scholarship this spring to continue to move the team in the very positive direction they are going.”

Gavrilovic’s decision opens a third scholarship for UD going into the 2014-15 season.
