Dayton bounces back from loss to George Mason with rout of Fordham

Toppin scores 19 points in his home state

The Dayton Flyers enjoyed a rare tension-free game in Atlantic 10 Conference play, dominating last-place Fordham for the last 32 minutes to win 75-52 on Saturday afternoon at Rose Hill Gym.

Obi Toppin, playing not far from his hometown of Ossining, N.Y., led Dayton with 19 points. Josh Cunningham added 14.

Jalen Crutcher and Jordan Davis each scored 10 points. Frankie Policelli, also playing in his home state, scored a career-high eight points.

Dayton led 33-20 at halftime and opened the second half on a 12-6 run.

The Flyers (13-7, 5-2) bounced back from a 67-63 loss at home Wednesday to George Mason to win their third A-10 road game. They won only one conference road game last season.

For Dayton, this ended a stretch of five straight A-10 games that were decided in the final minute.

Dayton shot 51.8 percent from the field and held Fordham to 29.5 percent.

Fordham (9-11, 0-7) had played well in its last five A-10 games, never losing by more than seven points and falling by only three points to to two of the top teams in the conference, Saint Louis and George Mason. The Rams suffered their first blowout loss since falling 76-51 at home to VCU on Jan. 5.

HALFTIME RECAP

Davis hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer as the Flyers built a 33-20 halftime lead.

Dayton rallied from a 9-6 deficit with a 14-0 run and then ended the half on a 7-0 run after the Rams cut their lead to 26-20.

Cunningham led the Flyers with 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Crutcher scored six points. Toppin and Policelli also scored six each.

Dayton shot 50 percent from the field but committed 10 turnovers. It had turnovers on six straight possessions after taking a 6-3 lead in the opening minutes. Dayton made 3 of 7 3-pointers. Policelli had two of them.

Fordham shot 25.8 percent (8 of 31), including 3 of 15 from 3-point range. Dayton had a 24-14 rebounding advantage.
