Commentary: Little Caesars Pizza Bowl has odd ring

I don’t often read The Onion, the satirical mock newspaper, but one headline not long ago struck the funny bone:

“Potential Employee Uprising Quelled With Free Pizza.”

How true. So many of our problems, from hyper children to upset workers, find solutions in a couple of warm pies. They make us happier, no matter what else is happening.

Can the same thing happen for Detroit sports?

The bowl game played in the city announced this week that it would change its name from the Motor City Bowl to the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl. General Motors Co. and Chrysler LLC will no longer sponsor the game, although Ford Motor Co. will remain as a sponsor.

The Motor City Bowl was one of the few remaining that allowed the personality of its city in the title. Now, instead, the downtown game in one of the Midwest’s nicest football stadiums will make us think of pizza.

Maybe that’s a good thing. Unfortunately, “Motor City” has taken on a different connotation in the past few years.

And now, the city can’t even rely on those companies to kick in for one of its major showcases. Sports, of course, has long been a no-brainer, go-to spot for sponsors, but maybe the folks in town are still too upset with those automakers.

Maybe the pizza will make them happier.
