Wright State captures Horizon League softball title

CLEVELAND — Wright State’s softball team claimed its third Horizon League title in four seasons on Saturday, May 15, by winning three games and beating No. 1 seed Cleveland State twice.

The Raiders, who earned an automatic bid to next week’s NCAA tournament, blanked Valparaiso 4-0 to begin the day, then beat CSU 8-3 and 6-3.

Senior pitcher Sharon Palma earned the win in the championship game, same as two years ago.

Linda Garza, who replaced Mike Larabee in the offseason, becomes the first WSU softball coach to qualify for the NCAA tournament in her inaugural season.

“When I took this position, I knew I was inheriting a great team,” Garza said. “It’s a great feeling knowing how hard we worked to get here.”

Sunday night at 10, on a tournament selection show airing on ESPNU, the Raiders will learn who and where they play in the first round.

A watch party, open to the public, is planned for Fox & Hound Grill and Pub at The Mall at Fairfield Commons in Beavercreek.
