Wittenberg's Phillips has family ties

Father was offensive lineman on Witt’s last national championship team.

SPRINGFIELD — For one Wittenberg University football player, the quest for a national championship has been a life-long pursuit.

Fifth-year senior defensive lineman Lance Phillips is the son of James “Bo” Phillips, a starter at offensive tackle for Wittenberg’s last national championship team in 1975.

“Every day he wears his ring,” Lance Phillips said. “It’s something he’s proud of. It’s something he wears close to his heart, and I hate looking at that ring. I want one of my own.”

Bo Phillips said he wears his ring only to games. He didn’t have to show his son to get him to play football when he was little.

“He took to football like a duck takes to water,” Bo said. “It’s been a joy. It’s been a great time. I’m proud and happy for him that he gets to experience it.”

Lance Phillips and the Tigers of 2009 continue their run in the NCAA Division III playoffs today, Dec. 5. They play at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in the quarterfinals at 1 p.m. Both teams are 12-0.

With a better knowledge of Wittenberg history than most players, Phillips knows the significance of this opportunity.

“I’ve been hearing stories about Dave Maurer, Dave Merritt, Bob Foster and Dean Kaven since I was a little kid,” Phillips said. “I used to wear a Wittenberg shirt under my pads in high school. I’ve known about this place for a long time, and it’s been a real blessing for me to be a part of this tradition.”
