Benzinger granted release from Wright State

Grant Benzinger has asked for and been granted his release from Wright State.

The decision comes after WSU fired coach Billy Donlon, who recruited Benzinger, last month and replaced him with Scott Nagy.

Benzinger, a sophomore guard from Moeller High School in Cincinnati, asked for his release before Nagy was named the new coach Monday. Benzinger was among the players who met with Nagy on Tuesday, shortly after the former South Dakota State coach was introduced at a press conference.

WSU athletic director Bob Grant said the process of asking for and being granted a release does not necessarily finalize a split.

“We’ve had dozens of athletes through the years who have asked for and been granted their release who never go anywhere,” he said.

Benzinger appeared in all 35 games with 26 starts last season and averaged 7.6 points per game.

As a freshman he played in all 31 games with 14 starts and scored the most points on the team, averaging 9.1 per game.
