The Flyers haven’t ruled out taking a current college player looking to transfer. They’ve had some success with that in the past, getting a few productive seasons out of the graduating Mickey Perry and landing Josh Parker, who will be eligible next season after leaving Drake.
Baseball adds five
UD baseball coach Tony Vittorio announced the signing of five players who will be eligible in 2010-11, including Sinclair Community College outfielder-first baseman Zach Stewart.
The Wayne High School grad is hitting .366 with seven homers and 54 RBIs in 46 games for the Tartan Pride.
The other signees include New Bremen High School outfielder (and three-sport star) Spencer Rohr; Tim Bury, a 6-foot-6 pitcher from Neosho County Community College in Chanute, Kan.; Cincinnati Turpin outfielder and pitcher Joe Cronin; and third baseman Kevin Thamann, who helped Cincinnati Moeller win a state title last season.
Thamann’s father, Jerry, is a former UD baseball player.
UD women honored
The women’s basketball team will receive the 2010 Erin Ritchey Memorial Volunteer Service Award during a luncheon at the Mandalay Banquet Center today.
The Flyers are being recognized for their support of individuals with disabilities. They’ve teamed up with the Montgomery County Board of Developmental Disabilities to start a fan club called FANtastic Flyers.
In addition to giving out tickets to games, the team has held special events for the group, including a postgame basketball clinic each year.
Vaulter sets mark
Freshman Katie Nageotte set a UD record in the pole vault and earned Atlantic 10 track-and-field rookie of the week honors.
The Olmstead native and defending A-10 indoor champ vaulted 12 feet, 9.5 inches, which is the best height in the conference this season. She also earned a berth in the outdoor junior national meet with her effort.
Football camps set
The UD football team will be holding its youth camps July 13-15. The sessions for grades 1-4 will go from 9 a.m. to noon, while grades 5-8 are scheduled from 1-4 p.m. The high school camp will run from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
