Cincinnati Reds place Joey Votto on disabled list

A hobbled Joey Votto is finally getting a break.

The Cincinnati Reds place their star first baseman on the 10-day disabled list Friday, 13 days after he was hit by pitch from Ryan Madson of the Nationals.

The team says Votto has a contusion on his lower right leg.

He started only six of the team’s last 10 games.

On the season, Votto is hitting .284 with nine homers and 55 RBIs. His .422 on-base percentage leads the National League, and his 91 walks are tied with Bryce Harper for the most in the NL.

Taking Votto’s place on the roster is Aristides Aquino, a 24-year-old outfielder from the Dominican Republic.

He played 61 games for the Dayton Dragons in 2015, batting .234 with five home runs, six steals and 27 RBIs.

This season, Aquino is hitting .249 with 18 homers, 19 doubles, 49 RBIs and 103 strikeouts in 107 games at Double-A Pensacola.

If/when he plays, Aquino will make his first professional appearance above Double-A and will become the seventh Reds player this season to make his major-league debut in 2018, joining Alex Blandino, Tanner Rainey, Zack Weiss, Rosell Herrera, Brandon Dixon and Jesús Reyes.
