Boy Scouts host sporting clays event

Fundraising shoot will have 100 rounds, followed by a dinner and raffle.

SPRINGFIELD — The inaugural Scouting Clays Classic will be Saturday, Aug. 21, to benefit the Tecumseh Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

This is a fundraising event for the Boy Scouts. The main event is 100 rounds of sporting clays at Camp Hugh Taylor Birch, east of Yellow Springs. Sporting clays start at 1 p.m., and a dinner and raffle follows the shoot.

The money raised at the event will help fill several needs, said Marty Richards, the local district director. It will provide opportunities and training for scouts, including introducing them to shooting sports. Maintenance and upkeep on the 400-acre camp isn’t cheap, either.

“Local dollars serve scouts locally,” Richards said.

Camp Birch also is a great venue to introduce scouts to shooting sports at a young age, Richards said.

“We have a real vested interest in getting kids involved,” Richards said.

The Scouting Clays Classic is another way to raise interest in Scouts, and Richards is pleased to see the Tecumseh Council growing.

“We’re doing well,” Richards said. “This council is on the upswing. Our membership is up over 9 percent over the past two years.”

The Tecumseh Council serves five counties: Clark, Champaign, Greene, Logan and Clinton.
