Big Ten football: Springfield’s Danny Davis reinstated at Wisconsin

Danny Davis, a former Springfield High School star athlete, is set to suit up for the Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday when they take on BYU.

The sophomore receiver was suspended for the first two games of the season as a result of his alleged involvement in an incident that led to fellow Badgers receiver and roommate Quintez Cephus being charged with two counts of sexual assault.

Davis has not been charged with any crime, but the criminal complaint alleges he was present during the assaults and took photos of the women.

“Danny will be eligible,” Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst told reporters in Madison this week. “His suspension is served, and he’ll be ready to go.”

Davis is listed among the No. 2 receivers on the depth chart published by the school.

“He’s starting his second season, but I think that he’s a guy that’s played in games before and made plays, so I think that he gives you some depth,” Chyrst said. “Certainly, he’s different than any of the receivers we’re playing with right now, so he gives you depth and a little bit of a different skill set.”

As far as recruiting rankings go, Davis is the most talented offensive skill player on the Wisconsin roster per 247Sports.com

Cephus has denied wrongdoing, but this week a judge rejected his attorneys’ motion to dismiss one of the charges and he is set to go to trial.

Cephus led Wisconsin in receiving yards (501) last year despite missing the end of the season with a broken leg.

Davis moved into a larger role after Cephus went down and finished his freshman year with 418 yards on 26 catches with five touchdowns.

At Springfield, Davis was the GWOC National East Offensive Player of the Year as senior in 2016 when he rushed for 1,195 yards and seven touchdowns. He also caught 22 passes for 559 yards and six more scores for the Wildcats.

Davis was an even better basketball player, finishing as the district’s all-time leading scorer with 1,774 points.
