Bengals will be without Eifert in Week 1

The first official injury report of the season won’t be released until Wednesday, but Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis essentially declared tight end Tyler Eifert out for Sunday’s game against the Jets in New York.

“He won’t practice with the team, but he’ll be doing his (rehab) practice,” Lewis said. “I don’t anticipate him taking any team reps this week.”

Eifert suffered an ankle injury in the Pro Bowl in January and had surgery in May. He said last month he was optimistic he could be ready for the opener, but shortly after he began running during his rehab work a report surfaced that he expected to miss at least three games.

Injuries have been a major story line during training camp and the preseason, but Lewis said he thinks Eifert will be the only player who doesn’t take team reps this week.
