Beavercreek loses touch in 4th quarter, falls to Mason


Beavercreek took a six-point lead into the fourth quarter but was outscored 18-3 and fell to Mason 43-34 in a girls Division I district final at Princeton on Saturday.

It was the last of four games and two other GWOC teams also lost, Fairmont and Wayne.

Beavercreek (21-5) appeared to be in great position to stun the Comets and led 31-25 after three quarters. Then the Beavers’ offense was unplugged to go with eight turnovers and two missed free throws.

The Beavers’ only bucket in the game-changing fourth quarter came with 28 seconds left on a 3-pointer by Cori Dilsavor. However, Mason already had gone on an 18-0 run.

It was the 43rd season for Beavercreek coach Ed Zink. He’s the state’s all-time winningest girls coach with more than 800 wins. Early this season he coached in his 1,000th game, all at Beavercreek.

Mason (20-3) will play defending D-I state champ Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame in a D-I regional semifinal at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Fairmont’s Trent Arena. MND advanced with a 48-28 defeat of Wayne. Lakota West (23-1) will play Walnut Hills (23-1) in the other regional semi at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday. West advanced with a 53-29 defeat of Fairmont.
