Cincinnati Reds rookie Aristides Aquino hit his 14th home run of the season on Thursday in the first inning against the Miami Marlins. All of the home runs have come in August. He set a National League rookie record for most home runs in a month.

Aquino has 14 home runs in 28 games in his career. No one has reached that total faster in Major League Baseball history.

Aquino also tied the Reds record for home runs in a month. Frank Robinson hit 14 home runs for the Reds in August 1962, and Greg Vaughn hit 14 in September 1999.

Aquino played in one game in 2018 and didn’t hit a home run. He has been a consistent power threat in 2019 since being promoted to the Cincinnati Reds on Aug. 1. Manager David Bell was asked in mid-August how long Aquino can keep it up.

“I’m not going to put any limits on him, that’s for sure,” Bell said. “He’s been so impressive with the way he’s stayed focused. If you start thinking too much about it — and that’s human nature — that’s a challenge. At some point, that’ll happen and then he’ll have to reboot, but right now he’s just doing a great job of staying in the moment.”

Aquino hit his 13th home run Wednesday, tying the National League rookie record. Cody Bellinger, of the Los Angeles Dodgers, also hit 13 home runs in a month (July 2017). Rudy York, of the Detroit Tigers, set the big-league rookie record with 18 home runs in August 1937.
