Warped Wing Brewing Company is gearing up to release a new beer next week that might just be a hit with a certain segment of the community that calls itself the Flyer Faithful.
The popularity of Flyer Red American Lager — a red lager with 4.5 percent alcohol by volume — won’t be limited to University of Dayton basketball fans. But its name and packaging certainly won’t hurt. And neither will the fact that there’s a chance the beer will be available at UD Arena this year.

Warped Wing will unveil the new brew at a party at 5 p.m. next Thursday, Oct. 19, at the brewery taproom at 26 Wyandot St. in downtown Dayton. The Flyer Red will be available to drink on draught that day, and will be available in 12-ounce six-packs for carryout. The beer will be released to retail outlets the following Tuesday, Oct. 24.
Warped Wing officials called Flyer Red “part of a fast-growing and ongoing, Lager-style series for the brewery,” which also produces the popular Trotwoood Lager.
In a release, Warped Wing focused on the aviation theme of Flyer Red, and did not mention UD.
“It’s not a leap to suggest that Ohioans own the sky,” Nick Bowman vice president of sales and marketing and managing partner of the brewery, said in a release. “If you think about the major milestones and heroic icons that came from Ohio, it’s pretty remarkable. From the accomplishments of The Wright Brothers, to the Air Force and space program mavericks such as Neil Armstrong and John Glenn, we’re still barely scratching the surface of influence the state has had on aviation. And with Wright-Patterson Air Force base and Museum being right here, that puts us at the epicenter of all things airborne.”
When asked this morning by this news outlet whether the Flyer Faithful might be interested in Flyer Red American Lager, Bowman replied, “This beer is a celebration of Ohio and it’s contributions to Flight and Space. I hope that all Daytonians and Ohioans will embrace and celebrate what this beer stands for. We have a lot to be proud of on this front!”
During last year’s basketball season, UD did sell Warped Wing Trotwood Lager at the local craft stations on both sides of the UD Arena, and offered cans of the same beer at the mobile can stations.
“Flyer Red has been submitted (to UD) for consideration” for the upcoming basketball season, “but no final confirmation has been determined on what beers we will be pouring this year,” Bowman said.
With the brewery’s “Share a Pint Make a Difference” program, Warped Wing will be donating a portion of the proceeds on all Flyer Red pints, 6-packs, posters and swag sold on the night of the release party to the Fisher House.

“The Fisher-Nightingale Houses are dedicated to providing an opportunity for military families to stay together and support each other when a loved one is undergoing medical treatment,” Bowman said. “The Fisher Houses provide physical and emotional support to our servicemen and servicewomen.”
