Icy roads lead to numerous crashes

Icy roadways have lead to several weather related crashes being reported throughout the Miami Valley on Interstates 675 and I-75 and Interstate 70.

Cold temperatures mixed with windy conditions and a bit of snow flurries we had earlier in the evening are perfect conditions for creating icy roads.

On southbound Interstate 675 just south of the Indian Ripple Road exit, OSP responded to a three car crash with entrapment. A truck and a minivan went off the roadway and down a 40-foot embankment and a third vehicle veered the opposite way into the median.

The occupants of the minivan were trapped and had to be extracted by firefighters that responded to the crash scene. All victims were taken to local hospitals with only minor injuries.

All drivers said they hit black ice, causing them to spin out on the slick interstate.

Authorities are stating that many of the overpasses and bridges are very slick and ice covered.

Salt trucks from ODOT are out and attempting to treat the major roadways, officials said.

State Highway Patrol troopers said most of the accidents tonight have only involved minor injuries. Although salt trucks are attending to area roadways some thoroughfares such as State Route 49 in the eastbound lanes are still slick, troopers added.
