WSU med school dean will return to teaching

During Dr. Howard Part’s tenure, the school has received $75M in gifts.

Dr. Howard Part will step aside as the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine’s dean and return to its full-time faculty, the school announced Friday.

Part will remain the school’s dean until a successor is chosen, a news release said. The search will begin immediately.

Under Part’s leadership, the medical school made strides in securing research and philanthropic dollars, expanding partnerships with the community and adding more specialized educational programs and facilities, according to the news release.

Part joined the school’s full-time associated faculty in 1988. He ascended through several leadership jobs before he was appointed dean in 1999.

Part called his years as dean “among the most rewarding of my life.”

“The opportunity to work with the outstanding leadership, faculty, students and staff at Wright State and oversee the growth of the Boonshoft School of Medicine has been the highlight of my career.”

David Hopkins, the university’s president, said the school has had an “extraordinary record of achievement” during Part’s tenure.

During Part’s tenure, WSU officials said the medical school received nearly $75 million in charitable gifts, including a $28.5 million gift from Oscar Boonshoft and his family in 2005. In addition, the $13.5 million Gandhi Medical Education Center, dedicated to educating medical students in their first two years, was opened while he was dean.
