Wittenberg Guild style show is Saturday

The 55th annual event to raise scholarship funds includes a social hour and a silent auction.

SPRINGFIELD — The Wittenberg Guild is a well regarded group that has raised more than $1 million, most of it to provide scholarships for area students attending Wittenberg University.

But it’s not clear that until this year that a member has used the phrase “generate buzz” to describe efforts to carry on the tradition of the late Martha Rodgers.

The Guild will host its 55th Annual Scholarship Style Show, “Hats Off to Women,” on Saturday at the Courtyard by Marriott. Admission is $25 for adults, $20 for Wittenberg faculty and staff and $10 for children. For reservations, call the Office of University Advancement at (937) 327-7432.

Former Radio City Rockette and Broadway performer Adrienne Oehlers will entertain.

A social hour and silent auction featuring holiday items and gourmet treats will begin at 10 a.m. At 11:30 a.m. — with their hair done and make-up applied by Mallia Salon and Day Spa — volunteer women and children will model fall fashions from Macy’s at Tuttle Crossing and Grissom’s Bridal and Tux Shop to commentary by Lynn Jacques of Macy’s.

In addition to enjoying music from Oehlers, whose touring credits include “Cabaret” and “A Chorus Line,” the audience will meet Wittenberg Miss Ohio Teen Brynne Mayne of London, Ohio, a Wittenberg sophomore.

As important as the show for the Guild’s future is the youth movement it hopes to start with style show chairwoman Lori Burcham.

Invited to join by Guild President Kitty Wildman, the 31-year-old Burcham brought two friends on board.

The Springfield native calls the Guild “a great organization with great women” whose purpose couldn’t be better. “Who doesn’t want to give money for our local kids to go to Wittenberg?” she asked.

“Hopefully, we’ll bring in a new wave of gals and kind of spark the interest again, be able to give back and generate some buzz.”
