The grant will support graduate fellowships, additional faculty, a library resource center, research and professional development opportunities for students and faculty, and an endowment to sustain the program upon the grant’s expiration, officials said.
Established in 2004, Wilberforce’s Masters of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling program prepares graduates to help meet the needs of people with developmental disabilities, psychiatric disabilities, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, alcohol and substance abuse behaviors, and other acquired disabling conditions.
“This is a very exciting time for the graduate program and the university as a whole,” said Patricia L. Hardaway, university president. “We are making great strides and the Department of Education grant is yet another accomplishment to strengthen our academic offerings and provide graduate study opportunities.”
Wilberforce, founded in 1856, is the nation’s oldest private, historically black university. It had a projected total fall enrollment of 650 students, according to university officials.
