Veterinarian to open new office in Urbana

URBANA – An abandoned coffee shop is getting a facelift on North Main Street, where its tenant hopes it will soon be filled with exam rooms, dental facilities and a pet pharmacy.

Erin Williamson, owner of The Pet Clinic of Urbana, said renovations on the building at 1053 N. Main St. should be completed within the next few weeks, and the business could be open by late August or early September.

A practicing veterinarian for about seven years, Williamson said she decided to open her first business because she believes it will fill a need for residents on the north side of the city.

“I saw a need in the area to start a small animal practice and just kind of ran with it,” she said. The office will allow her to work closer to her home outside Urbana.

While there is still plenty of work to be done, Williamson said she believes the former Blue Heron Coffee Roasters building will provide plenty of space, and allow for expansion if necessary.

“I think there’s a lot of potential here,” she said.

On Thursday, contractors were painting the exterior of the building, but when its finished, Williamson said it will provide space for between 5 to 7 employees, as well as room for a laboratory, digital X-ray and ultrasound machines, two exam rooms, a waiting area and a surgery room.

She said there are also plans to install curbs and sidewalks and clean up the area around the facility.

Williamson said her office will work primarily with dogs and cats. While she enjoys working with the animals, she said her favorite part of the job is speaking with clients to explain how they can best care for their pets.

“It is working with animals, but really you’re working with people more than anything else,” she said.

Williamson, who has a dog named Hannah and cats named Simon and Flyer, said she has been impressed by the support residents have shown other businesses in the city.

“I’m really hoping to make this a part of the community,” she said.
