Urbana offering curbside recycling program

The city of Urbana will offer curbside recycling pickup for non-hazardous items April 12-15.

Residents can place non-hazardous items along the curb for collection at the curb a April 9-11. Waste Management employees will pickup the items, and the hauler will take it to a landfill or dispose of it, said Kerry Brugger, director of administration for the city of Urbana.

“It’s been a number of years since we’ve done a collection. We felt to be more equitable, if we could give more people the opportunity, where they didn’t have to have a pickup truck, they wouldn’t have to arrange to have somebody haul it somewhere else,” Brugger said.

Brugger said residents received information about the residential curbside recycling event that detailed acceptable items that can be left curbside for haulers.

Brugger said resident can put the items at their curb a few days prior to the event.

“Waste Management will have crews to come through each day, and they will pickup items that meet the criteria at the curbside for any resident that gets it out there.,” Brugger said. “The opportunity here should really let a lot more people participate and maybe get an opportunity to clean out areas of the garage or some of those nooks and crannies in the house they would like to get rid of over the years.”

The Alicia Titus Memorial Fund has partnered with Urbana University and made volunteers available who can help the elderly and people with disabilities who need assistance getting items to the curb. Titus died in the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. For assistance, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. call 937-772-9372 on March 28 through March 30.

Tires, batteries and paint are prohibited, Brugger said.
