Along with discussions, workshops and demonstrations, several pilots will be offering rides for at a relatively inexpensive prices, Millner said. In previous years, some of the flights offered could cost hundreds of dollars. But many of the pilots on hand this year will be offering much cheaper flights, in the hopes of increasing interest in aviation.
Millner said flights will be available on a T-6 Texan, a single-engine plane designed to train pilots during World War II. Flights will also be available on a Piper Cub, a simple, light aircraft that will celebrate its 75th anniversary next year. As many as 20 Piper Cub planes may visit the show this year.
“It’s a limited opportunity to find a variety of aircraft all in one place and find the rides as inexpensive as they are,” Millner said.
In addition to the rides, Millner said World War II veterans will attend this year as part of a roundtable discussion in which they will discuss their experiences during the war. The event is well attended each year, Millner said.
As many as 400 aircraft are expected to attend MERFI over the course of the two-day event.
Because this year’s theme is, “Horsepower from the Ground Up,” there will also be antique tractors and a car show on display.
“This is definitely geared toward families,” Millner said.
