Background/overview
Urbana-born Grant Holcomb went to Bowling Green University and graduated with a degree in restaurant management. His college roommate became an assistant director of the Myrtle Beach Convention Center in South Carolina, so Grant decided to go to Myrtle Beach and work for him in its food service industry. While there, he met Demora, who was also part of the food service staff.
Later, his grandfather, J. Edgar Black, suggested the couple come home to Urbana and put their experience to work in the form of a new business venture. They made the move soon thereafter.
Upon learning this building was vacant, they made plans to open a “coffee, tea and wine cafe.” During their planning stages they began bagging tea knowing they’d be doing so for their new business, thus, they chose the name TeaBaggers.
TeaBaggers opened in July 1990.
The couple has two sons, Cameron, who lives in Myrtle Beach, and Nolan, who graduated this March from Columbus (Ohio) Culinary Institute. To honor Nolan’s accomplishment, TeaBaggers is offering a Chef’s Special daily until April 22.
Along with TeaBaggers’ freshly brewed teas, it has many barrels of flavored gourmet coffee beans from which to choose and then watch being ground to fulfill your order. The owners take pride in being “coffee designers,” because they mix flavors to develop a specific coffee taste for each consumer.
The owners also personally create your choice from TeaBaggers’ specialty menu of freshly made soups, salads, sandwiches and sweets such as the Cheesecake of the Day (in one of at least 60 varieties).
