United Way achieves its campaign goal

SPRINGFIELD — They made goal.

In spite of the great recession, the people of Clark, Champaign and Madison counties achieved the goals for this year’s United Way campaign, officials announced at a luncheon recognizing volunteers Tuesday, Feb. 23.

All together the three counties raised $1,577,566.52, with each county meeting its goal of raising $52 more than last year — a benchmark set with the struggling economy in mind, said Executive Director Doug Lineberger.

Clark County met its goal of $1,258,452 while Champaign achieved the benchmark of $226,852, according to the organization. Madison County achieved its goal of $92,252.

“Any effort like this, the vitality of it depends on the vigor of its volunteers,” said Phil Teusink, Clark County campaign chair.

Brian Nicol and Chip Spinning served as Champaign and Madison counties chairs, respectively.

Part of the campaign’s success hinged on the Club 52 effort, which asked donors to contribute just $1 more a week, or $52 a year, said Lineberger.

The Clark County Literacy Coalition is one organization whose finances are buoyed each year by the United Way effort, which supports basic literacy and English as a second language programs for adults through the coalition.

United Way helps several local organizations, including the Rocking Horse Community Health Center, Urbana Champaign County Senior Citizens Center and YMCAs in Clark and Champaign counties.

“We all have to do our share to help the community,” said Jim Chase, who headed the campaign for participating PrimeOhio Corporate Park companies. “It’s an important source of funding and the ability to give at the workplace.”
