Ultes dies at 65 in Florida

Wittenberg grad was also former president of the O.S. Kelly Co.

SPRINGFIELD — Carl Thomas Ultes, former president and treasurer of Springfield’s O.S. Kelly Co., died Dec. 4 in his Naples, Fla., home.

Tom Ultes, as he was known, was 65.

A 1967 graduate of Wittenberg University, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, Ultes continued to support Wittenberg as a member of its Benjamin Prince Society and through the 2000 donation of fitness equipment to the school’s Health, Physical Education and Recreation Center.

Andrew Helmuth, who served as Ultes’ real estate agent, said that Ultes and wife, Sheila, “loved to travel,” particularly in colder months. “They weren’t (so much) leaving Springfield” when they moved to Florida, Helmuth said, “they were going to warmer climates.”

A brief obituary from the Fuller Funeral Home of Naples mentions that Ultes was preceded in death “by his beloved parents, Carl Ultes Jr. and Harriet Patterson and his beloved grandparents Carl (Sr.) and Louise Ultes.” All were associated with the O.S. Kelly Co., which was sold to piano maker Steinway in 1999.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Melanoma Center at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.
