“We hear from him sporadically because it’s whenever he has access to e-mail,” said Huffman.
Lawrence recently sent a photo of himself on guard on top of a tank with the words “Go Cardinals!” written on the vehicle.
He e-mails his co-workers to update them on how he is doing, and the teachers often share that information with their students.
Last year was his first year of teaching at Triad, where he is also a wrestling coach and quiz bowl advisor, said Huffman.
Having someone from the school’s family on active duty makes the war all the more poignant, he said.
“It just brings it home to you a little more,” said Huffman. “Now every time you hear about soldiers being hurt in Iraq, you pause and say ‘Oh, God, where was it?’”
Luckily, Lawrence seems to be doing well and hasn’t had any “close calls,” said Huffman.
Lawrence is certified to teach chemistry and physics, two of the school’s more advanced science courses.
During his deployment, the school has deferred physics and offers chemistry online, according to Huffman.
