Supervalu to close Xenia distribution site

Supervalu Inc. will close its Xenia distribution center, consolidating it into a larger distribution site in Fort Wayne, Ind., the company said Thursday.

The move will affect 120 employees, the company said.

“Supervalu regularly reviews its business operations and made the decision to consolidate these distribution centers to improve operating efficiency and better position the company for strategic growth,” the company said in a statement. “The consolidation is expected to be completed by the end of September 2012.”

The company identified what it called “excess capacity in the more than 640,000 square foot Fort Wayne facility,” enabling the consolidation.

The company said it will work with affected employees and union representatives to “discuss the details of a consolidation and ensure a smooth transition.”

With annual sales of about $35 billion. Supervalu has about 4,300 stores and about 130,000 employees.
