Springfield woman starts Jazzercise franchise

A local woman recently opened a new Jazzercise franchise in Springfield and is looking to eventually add more classes and instructors.

Kathy Kearns opened her Jazzercise program in December in space she is renting at Fellowship Christian Church, 2301 Valley Loop Road. The classes are an hour each and include dance routines that focus on cardio and resistance training, for example. The routines are changed regularly so customers don’t grow bored with the program, she said.

The first class is free to new customers, and typical fees are $10 per class or $40 per month. Courses are are 6 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays and from 2 to 3 p.m. Sundays. A package of 10 classes is $80.

Kearns has been an instructor for two years but started her own franchise in Springfield after the studio where she previously taught closed. Typical classes include as many as 15 to 20 participants, but some have already had 30 people, she said.

“In just a month I’ve been really amazed at the turn out and the people that have been coming and how it’s been growing,” Kearns said.

Her long-term goal is to add more instructors and eventually host more classes in the area.

“My growth depends on getting instructors because, as soon as I can, then I can add more classes,” Kearns said.
