Springfield Symphony Orchestra adds circus act

Dec. 4 concert will feature classical music and aerialists, contortionists, jugglers.

SPRINGFIELD — Still working its way through a season of daring new heights, the Springfield Symphony Orchestra already is looking ahead to the 2010-11 season.

Next season, they’ll keep things in the rafters.

Literally.

The music next season won’t be as adventurous — it’ll be a return to the stone-cold classics after a season of love-it-or-hate-it new music — but the SSO’s concert on Dec. 4 alone should leave the audience breathless.

That’s when Cirque de la Symphonie comes to perform with the SSO.

It’s precisely what it sounds like.

Aerialists, contortionists and jugglers will perform with the orchestra in a program that features everything from “Ride of the Valkyries” to music from “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.”

“They’ve been very successful everywhere they’ve gone,” said David Deitrick, executive director of the SSO.

It also gives the SSO a chance to change up its annual December concert, which typically has the holidays in mind.

“We’ve been doing straight classical concerts,” Deitrick said. “It’s time for us to do something for the full family.”

And, while unrelated to the regular season, the whole family also should be psyched to see the SSO in action for free this summer at the Summer Arts Festival. The orchestra will be doing an entire concert of John “Star Wars” Williams on June 27 in Veterans Park.

Season tickets for the six-concert 2010-11 season in Kuss Auditorium — four programs of heavy-duty “Masterworks” and two lighter “NightLights” shows — will be available starting May 1, with single tickets on sale June 30. Visit springfieldsym.org or call (937) 328-3874 for more information.

And for those keeping score, next season will mark Peter Stafford Wilson’s ninth as conductor.
