2 Springfield schools briefly locked down Thursday

SPRINGFIELD — Two Springfield schools were locked down briefly Thursday afternoon after a school staff member saw a boy with a gun near one of the schools, police said.

Officers responded to the area of Schaefer Middle School after the caller said the boy was on a bicycle in front of the school, holding what appeared to be a rapid-fire handgun, said Springfield Police Division Lt. Jeff Meyer.

Police then received a report that the boy was riding south on High Street in the direction of Horace Mann Elementary School, so police locked that school down too, Meyer said.

Officers were not able to locate a person with a gun and the schools were returned to their normal states after about 20 minutes.

“You never know in cases like that how it’s going to go,” he said.
