One of the most telling signs of a ruptured natural gas line is the smell of rotten eggs, which is why a statewide egg hunt is coming to Springfield in order to raise awareness about gas leaks.

Columbia Gas of Ohio representatives will be in Springfield from noon to 2 p.m. today and to host an egg hunt that will offer participants a chance to win a $100 Visa gift card.

A 4-foot-tall egg will be hidden somewhere in the downtown area and clues will be posted on Columbia Gas’s Facebook and Twitter pages.

This event is part of a statewide egg hunt that started on April 6 and is taking part in nine cities including Columbus, Springfield, Findlay, Toledo, Mansfield, Lorain, Alliance, Chillicothe and Zanesville.

Dave Rau, communications manager at Columbia Gas, said the egg hunts are designed to raise awareness on how to identify and properly handle a natural gas leak, which smells like rotten eggs, an odor that’s added to make the odorless gas detectable.

“If people smell natural gas, it’s really important to us that they take immediate action, leave the area and give us a call,” he said in what he described as the process of Smell and Tell.

This is the first year that Columbia Gas is hosting an event like this and the hunts are free to attend.

“We do a lot to get our safety messages out,” Rau said. “We wanted this to be fun and creative, something that people will remember.”
