Springfield resident’s life hack goes viral

A local photographer will appear on a national morning TV show today after a life-hack video she posted has received more than 17 million views online.

Springfield resident Tonya Hayner Stewart, owner of T&D Photography, will appear live on Good Morning America on ABC at 7 a.m. today in New York City.

“I’m still blown away by this,” Stewart said.

She initially posted the video for her friends at the Home Road Church, 2560 E. Home Road. The video shows her making a gift box with half of a department store gift box using folding techniques and scissors.

“I was doing it for them, hoping it would help somebody,” she said. “I never, never in my life dreamed that it would go viral.”

On Nov. 20, Stewart was wrapping Christmas presents and noticed she was missing half of a department store gift box. She asked her son to record a video of her performing the life hack her sister-in-law Jackie Hayner showed her 30 years ago, she said — and she later posted it to Facebook.

“The next day, it had 1 million views,” she said.

It’s also been shared more than 500,000 times.

She’s used the trick several times over the years, she said.

She’ll be featured on one segment of GMA, she said. The visit to GMA allowed her to make her first trip to New York City with her husband, Doug.

“I’m sure I’m not the only who’s done it,” Tanya Stewart said.
