Springfield officer seriously injured, cited after crash with semi

The Springfield police officer seriously injured in a downtown crash earlier this month has been cited, according to a traffic crash report.

The crash happened near the intersection of North Fountain Avenue and East Columbia Street around 3:45 a.m. on Feb. 2, according to Springfield police, which turned the investigation over to the Ohio State High Patrol.

A patrol vehicle driven by Officer Geovanny Mercado ran a red light and struck a semi, driven by Sandra Wagner, the report says.

“Mr. Mercado was traveling southbound on Fountain Avenue. Ms. Wagner was traveling westbound on Columbia Street,” the report says. “Mr. Mercado drove through a red light, struck Ms. Wagner.”

Mercado was taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center with serious injuries, the report says. He was cited for failure to stop/yield at a red light.

A hazmat team was called to the scene because the semi was leaking diesel fuel.

The road was closed for almost two hours while crews cleaned up the crash, the report says.
