Springfield to offer online water bill payment

The service will come with a fee; major credit cards will be accepted.

City residents will soon be able to pay their water bills online for a fee, potentially saving a check and a stamp or a trip to city offices.

This is the second payment system Springfield has digitized, according to Deputy Finance Director Bob Mauch — the first was for income taxes.

“Everybody’s still going to receive a paper bill,” Mauch said.

For now, you can’t opt out of getting that paper bill even if you want to. But “for $3, it’ll save you a trip to the box,” he said.

Visa, Mastercard and Discover cards will be accepted, Mauch said, when the city finalizes the system and links to it from several places on the city’s website.

Someone wishing to use the system, which will be online in the coming weeks, will pay $3 per payment for bills up to $100, and larger fees for larger bills. An account number will be needed to sign up.

Some banks with online banking services also have the capability to pay utility bills, Mauch said — often for free.
